​Dr. Holly Horan is an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Heersink School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and is a birth and postpartum doula with a PhD in medical anthropology. She also holds an appointment as an adjunct assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa). Holly’s research focuses on maternal stress and birth outcomes in Puerto Rico and perinatal care access and continuation in Alabama. She recently worked alongside colleagues in Puerto Rico to conduct a student on perceived maternal stress. Holly also recently served as the program coordinator for the Community Doula Program, a Medicaid-funded program providing doula services to priority populations in three counties in Oregon. Holly serves on a number of boards for community-based organizations and non-profits that focus on improving perinatal health in Alabama and elsewhere in the United States (US). She currently serves as co-investigator on a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant and the National Institutes of Health Consortium grant, both of which focus on improving access and expanding perinatal care services and support in the state of Alabama. She is the director of the Collaborative Perinatal Care Lab (Co-Care Lab), a space investigating perinatal health, health advocacy and health modeling. Holly is committed to improving perinatal health care in the US and US territories and is grateful for the collaboration of brilliant partners and students in ​this work.
