It is the mission of the Department of Anthropology at The University of Alabama

  • to educate the general student population in those rudiments of anthropology essential for getting beyond an ethnocentric understanding of the history, nature, and functioning of ancient and modern societies
  • to train undergraduate majors in the broad content and perspectives of the discipline while preparing them to enter the job market or pursue graduate studies
  • to prepare graduate students with a broad understanding of the discipline, in-depth knowledge of at least one sub-discipline, and detailed comprehension of the research process in anthropology
  • to produce original research of such quality, especially in the fields of archaeology and medical anthropology, that the national stature of the department is enhanced
  • to fully participate in the activities of academic citizenship at the department, college, university, regional, and national level
