Lambda Alpha Scholarship Deadline

February 23, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 4:45 pm

Here is another scholarship opportunity for our students.

Graduate students should work directly with their faculty advisors to submit their application, but please let me know who is applying so I have it for our records. The deadline is March 1—it must be postmarked by then (snail mail submission only). There can be multiple applicants from the same university.

Undergraduates should send me (mgalbrai@ua.edu or to my box in 19 ten Hoor) a single copy of all of their application materials no later than 4:45 PM on February 23. We can only have one candidate from UA. Perhaps, as in the past, the undergraduate advisor (so Cam), department chair (so Ian) and I can be the committee who decides who will be our candidate. The candidate who is selected must be prepared to send four copies all materials to Lambda Alpha postmarked by March 1. Applicants must be a “true” senior, which means they will graduate between May and December of this year (2016).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Marysia

LAMBDA ALPHA NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

and

LAMBDA ALPHA GRADUATE RESEARCH GRANTS

Dear Chapter Sponsor:

With the receipt of the Scholarship and Graduate Research Grants guidelines, we encourage new chapters, and the many chapters that have not participated in the past, to submit nominees: one for the Scholarship, and as many deemed qualified for the grant(s). These are limited and closed competitions with a sizable award. A well-qualified candidate has a reasonable chance to win. To ensure a quality set of candidates, potential applicants will be allowed to join the honorary, but must be accepted by their chapter by submitting their chapter sponsor signed membership card and $25 fee (do not include in application packet, but mail in separate envelope) before the application postmarked deadline of March 1, 2016.

Please remember the requirement established in 2014 of submitting the application with 4 official/original transcripts (no copies accepted), as well as no E-mail information accepted. Please collect all transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc., before mailing to Lambda Alpha.

Yours truly,

Mark D. Groover, Ph.D.

National Executive Secretary

Reminder: Please ask your members to use the regalia order form in the back of any Annual Newsletter or the LA website to order items no later than two weeks before their graduation date to allow time for processing and shipping.

LAMBDA ALPHA NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

Your chapter may send forward only ONE candidate for this award. The Lambda Alpha National Scholarship of $5000 is to be awarded to a *TRUE graduating senior (summer 2016) majoring in anthropology.  The winner of the scholarship will be announced in early June, 2016.

The chapter faculty sponsor of the scholarship candidate must forward (no E-mails accepted) to the National Office before the postmarked March 1st deadline, 4 copies (one original for the National Office and 3 copies to the National Executive Council) of the following materials printed front-to-back and stapled, with NO covers/folders:

  1. A letter of nomination from the department or appropriate academic unit stating the candidate is applying for the National Scholarship (4 copies).
  2. Curriculum vitae (4 copies).
  3. A statement signed by the applicant, located on page 3, giving permission to the National Executive Council to view submitted transcripts (4 copies).
  4. Four (4) original transcripts of all undergraduate grades.
  5. Two (2) supporting letters of recommendation – one must be from a professional anthropologist (4 copies each) – copies should be made by faculty supporter and given to applicant.
  6. A statement of future professional plans limited to one page or less, single spaced (4 copies).
  7. Sample of the applicant’s professional writing (i.e.: a manuscript or course paper – 4 copies). Co-authored publications and contract archaeological reports are not acceptable.       The submission should be no more than “article length” – 30-page maximum. The purpose is to evaluate formal writing skill, not to demonstrate research productivity.

As of 2015, it is your responsibility to sign the manuscript release form on page 6 and send with your CD, thumb drive, etc., to the Lambda Alpha Journal, not the National Office, for consideration.

*TRUE: An applicant is considered an eligible graduating senior for purposes of competing for the Lambda Alpha National Scholarship Award if she/he has acquired formal senior status since the last competition or if she/he competes as an ongoing senior, but must then graduate by the end of the academic year. An applicant can compete only once for the award.
