Anthropology is Elemental Course

“Anthropology is Elemental” is a course open to Anthropology majors/minors who have taken the 4 cores courses in Biological Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, and Anthropological Linguistics and have at least a 3.0 GPA in Anthropology and to Anthropology graduate students.

“Anthropology is Elemental” is a truly unique anthropology course that you would not be able to take anywhere else. Who knew you could have been learning about anthropology in elementary or middle school? We’ve discovered that students can learn anthropology at that age & are better prepared for life because of it. “Anthropology is Elemental” is a service-learning course, which means, if you enroll, you offer a service to the community while you learn. Students in “Anthropology is Elemental” spend one class per week on campus learning the lessons they will teach and discussing how to approach an elementary school classroom and the other class in as part of a team in a local elementary or middle school classroom teaching anthropology.

We have taught this class for two years now and been doing outreach in the local schools for over 5 years, and the kids LOVE anthropology. We have recently begun a collaboration with schools in Madagascar and are integrating a cultural exchange between our elementary schools and schools in Madagascar. This is the absolute best way to apply your anthropology major now & decide if you really like this stuff. Students in past semesters have loved it so much, they have stayed on to teach as volunteers at other local schools.

I know this sounds like a schmaltzy infomercial, but seriously, don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Only UA has an anthropology course even remotely like this one.

This is a 3-credit course open to upper-level Anthropology majors with a GPA of at least 3.0. Classes meet Tues/Thurs 1:30-2:45 and will be taught by Avery McNeece. Attached is a flyer I encourage you to share with your Anthropology friends.
