Margaret Searcy

Margaret Searcy was the first student to receive a Master's in anthropology at the University of Alabama. She received her degree in 1954. In 1963 Margaret was hired to teach in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and continued to do so until her retirement in 1988. Margaret was a founding member of the faculty of the Department of Anthropology when it was established as an entity separate from the Sociology Department in 1967. Mrs. Searcy was responsible for teaching many sections of large introductory-level classes in anthropology for many years, and she provided the first exposure to anthropology for thousands of students at Alabama.
