Admission Requirements

 Deadline for All Applications is January 31!

M.A. PROGRAM

     A bachelor's degree in anthropology is not required for admission to the Master's degree program, but students entering without sufficient background will be required to complete preparatory class work prior to taking graduate courses. All applicants must meet the general guidelines for admission to the Graduate School. These include a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale for the last 60 semester hours in a degree program, and a combined verbal and quantitative score of at least 300 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  Additionally, a score of four (4) or greater on the Analytical Writing component of the test is required.  Applications must be received prior to January 31 for admission the subsequent fall semester. The earlier the application is received, the more likely it is that financial aid can be awarded.
     Applications consist of:

  1. a completed application form with statement of purpose;
  2. official transcripts for all undergraduate/graduate work;
  3. GRE scores; and
  4. three (3) letters of recommendation from individuals (typically professors) who are in a position to evaluate the applicant’s intellectual potential.

Students may submit additional supporting material (e.g., a curriculum vita, writing sample) if they wish.

Ph.D. PROGRAM

     The Ph.D. program requires that a student have completed a Master's degree in anthropology before pursuing Ph.D. course work. It must be noted that completion of the M.A. requirements in our program does not automatically imply acceptance in our (or any other) Ph.D. program.  All applicants must meet the general guidelines for admission to the Graduate School. These include a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale for the M.A. degree, and a combined verbal and quantitative score of at least 300 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Additionally, a score of four (4) or greater on the Analytical Writing component of the test is required. Applications must be received prior to January 31 for admission the subsequent fall semester. The earlier the application is received, the more likely it is that financial aid can be awarded. Contact our Director of Graduate studies with this link for details.
